Education
University of Missouri School of Journalism
Journalism and International Studies double major, French minor
Experience
Vox Magazine – Fall 2012
Contributing Writer
I wrote department stories and long features. The deadlines were strict, but I did the reporting on my own schedule. For each feature, I wrote multiple drafts and attended meetings to discuss each draft with a panel of editors.
Street Sense – Summer 2012
Editorial Intern
I wrote comprehensive stories about long-term issues surrounding homelessness and poverty in Washington D.C. I also wrote features about people struggling with homelessness and organizations trying to help. I designed pages for print and edited copy. I learned how to navigate through a marginalized community of people in order to find stories that are important to the most vulnerable stakeholders.
Columbia Missourian – Spring 2011, Spring 2012
Beat Reporter
I covered local news out of individual neighborhoods. I kept a section of the paper as well as a neighborhood news blog updated. I learned to write on deadline for a professional daily paper.
Community Outreach Team
I responded to comments, checked analytics and encouraged both online and offline community involvement in the paper. I learned to use tools like storify and social media for news purposes. I facilitated and encouraged reader-produced content.
Media Next - Fall 2011
Research Intern
I interviewed experts and search news archives in order to discover trends in Pune, Maharashtra, India for a local media partner. I learned how to properly interview and quote people who did not speak English as their first language. I also wrote stories for the Daily News and Analysis and the Pune Mirror, two local papers in Pune.
Her Campus Mizzou - Fall 2010
Reporter
I wrote features for an online campus magazine. I was part of the staff right when the magazine started, so I learned a lot about the internal workings of publications. We had to find sponsors and try to make a name for ourselves. It was student-run, so there wasn’t the same hierarchy of editors there is at professional publications. I learned to work independently without an editor’s strict deadlines.
Montgomery County Sentinel - Summer 2008
Intern
I wrote community news and features. I learned how to cover government actions through a story I wrote about a bill to legalize slot machines. I had to interview elected officials and other high-up policy makers for that story. I also learned to cover breaking news when a crane fell through a wall on a construction project I was covering.
